No1 on the Christmas Hits

You'd better watch out,
You'd better not cry;
You'd better keep cash,
I'm telling you why:
Recession is coming to town.

It's hitting you once,
It's hitting you twice
It doesn't care if you've been careful and wise
Recession is coming to town

It's worthless if you've got shares
It's worthless if you've got bonds
It's safe when you've got cash in hand
So keep cash for goodness sake, HEY

You'd better watch out
You'd better not cry
You'd better keep cash
I'm telling you why:
Recession is coming to town!
Finance products are confusing
Finance products are so vague
The banks make you bear the cost of risk
So keep out for goodness sake, OH

You'd better watch out
You'd better not cry
You'd better keep cash
I'm telling you why:
Recession is coming to town

Singapore River Regatta 2008

alright alright. here's my update on the race. no photos though. another time maybe? =]

Day 1 - 22nd November 2008
two heats, two lane 2s. morale was already high on that day. we really worked together as a team, and frankly speaking, i've never been in a boat with such a great team spirit. of course, we overcame the crappy LANE 2, and emerged first in both heats. first, but not the best among all teams. so we decided, we'll do better the next day!

Day 2 - 23rd November 2008
one semi-final and two finals for me. the intensity from Day 1 increased as it was brought over to the 2nd and final day of competition. anxiety level got high, there was nervousness among the team, but we didn't let it affect our performance. once again, we cleared every single set, finishing in first position for all. Lane 3, Lane 2 and even Lane 1, nothing stopped us from believing in ourselves. for the benefit of those who don't know what's the difference, Lane 1 is deemed the one with the heaviest water, because of the shallow waters. thus, more effort is required to make the boat move.

getting back, winning the Tertiary Finals really made us high. crossing the finish line, i turned and look at Jason, he was overjoyed, so much so that he cried. i was happy too, my first medal in five months (excluding 10km challenge), since Singapore Dragon Boat Festival, the triple POL-ITE sweep that we had. it boosted our morale as we cheered when we got back to 'camp'. we were high, we were ready for the National Championships 3 hours later.

3 hours passed like 3 minutes. i did a visualisation set, after their warm up, with Team B before they went down for their minor finals. i could feel it, they want it really badly too, even though it wasn't the grand finals. during the visualisation, i made the scenario that they've won, they had to feel happy, they had to feel the sense of satisfaction crossing the finish line, FIRST. one man showed his emotions, he even cried, stating, 'the feel of winning is so great, i really want to feel it', when i asked him why he cried. these people from Team B motivated me to want to win for Team A, my team.

it was now time for us to warm up, time to talk through, time to motivate each other, time to psyche up. we did everything, we took alot of time doing so, but everything was worth it.

Team B had already set off by the time we were at the holding area, but we saw them under the bridge at the starting line. how can i forget, as we were paddling towards them, i could feel the unity as we echoed, 'STROKE BY STROKE, STROKE, STROKE, STROKE BY STROKE', together as a boat. when we saw Team B, we cheered for them, they cheered for us. the team spirit was there, a whole RPDB team spirit. because there was a delay Team B went to paddle a little more, to avoid cooling down their bodies, and minds. we saw them again as they were paddling and we were resting, and echoed again, 'STROKE BY STROKE, STROKE, STROKE, STROKE BY STROKE'. we were in different boats, but our minds belonged to the same team, RPDB.

Team B had to gather eventually. as their race started, i though to myself, those people, they are the future of RPDB. i really wished them the best for the Minor Finals. i wanted them to get first place. although my wish didn't come true, and they got 4th, i was proud, proud of them, for being better than my batch, who went into only the Plate Finals last year.

directing my focus back to Team A, i had to prepare myself, anxiety level was increasing as we were at the start line, in Lane 1, where all the photographers are just on my right, on the steps. i calmed myself down. i needed optimum performance. 'i can do it, i can do it. i want the gold, i want to WIN', that's what i was telling myself in my mind. by then, the boats were almost all aligned.

starter - 'ALL BOATS HOLD WATER!'
RP Team A - 'RP FOCUS!'
RP Team A - 'ANYTIME ANYTIME!'
starter - 'ARE YOU READY?!'
all teams - 'UP!'
starter - 'ATTENTION!'
starter - '*BLAST OF AIR-HORN*'

the race has began, National Chamopionship Grand Finals (Men). the whole set from start to end, i never thought of fatigue, i thought of winning. initally, we were lagging behind the other teams as i can see with my head tilting left as i paddled. but at the charging, i paddled my guts out. boom boom boom, i could see the number '2' on the other boat moving back, and back, and back, till it's almost aligned. i wanted to bloody win, and i could feel the satisfaction, eating up the other boats. as we passed the finish line, i was sure we got the gold as i saw the other boats slightly behind us. but i didn't want to celebrate too early because i may be wrong, so i waited for the results on shore.

hearing that KwokYong went unconscious and fell off the boat, i was anxious and worried. rushed and rushed, then found out that he was alright.

when the results were out, Steve confirmed with us that we were first, we got high once again! we started hugging each other as we celebrated. the greatest celebration came after we got the medals, and we were back in 'camp'.

we cheered as a whole RPDB. we shook UOB Plaza. the other teams could only stare. we are Quad-Champs! 4 gold medals, something never accomplished by any teams paddling in the main events. i felt like i was on estacy! so happy, feeling the sense of satisfaction, feeling the HYPE.

Singapore River Regatta 2008 was a great race, the greatest i've ever been in.
it was a race for Steve, because he's it's his last with RPDB, beacuse he brought us to where we are.
it was a race for Jin Dian, because of his contributions as an assistant coach, because it signalled a start for him as the new head coach of RPDB.
it was for the Year 3s, because it was their last.
it was for Team A, because we really wanted it more than any other team, because we finally knew what team spirit is.
it was for Team B, because they've trained really hard, because they showed what team spirit can do.
it was for the girls, because it's time for them to step up to the National Team.
it was for RPDB, because we want to build a legacy, because we know we can.

Nice 1

Facts on Sleep:
While small children typically take naps in the afternoon, our culture generally frowns upon mid-day sleep, even those who get enough sleep. Many people experience a natural increase in drowsiness in the afternoon, about 8 hours after waking or what we can call the “after lunch” effect. Research shows that you can make yourself more alert and energised with a nap. Mid-day sleep, or a ‘power nap’, gives you better reaction time and more efficiency for the next dragon boat race. Here’s what you need to know about the benefits of sleep and how a power nap can help you!

How Much Sleep Do You Need?
The body needs 7-8 hours of sleep per day; 6 hours or less triples your risk of a car accident. (Interestingly, too much sleep–more than 9 hours–can actually be harmful for your health; recent studies show that those who sleep more than 9 hours per day don’t live as long as their 8-hour-sleep counterparts!)

The Effects of Missed Sleep
Sleep is cumulative, so if you lose sleep one day, you feel it the next. If you miss adequate sleep several days in a row, you build up a ‘sleep deficit’, which impairs the following:

  • Reaction time
  • Judgment
  • Vision
  • Information processing
  • Short-term memory
  • Performance
  • Motivation
  • Vigilance
  • Patience

Fatigued people also experience more moodiness, aggressive behaviors, burnout and more stress. This leads to under performing for a race.

The Benefit of a Power Nap:
Studies show that 20 minutes of sleep in the afternoon provides more rest than 20 minutes more sleep in the morning (though the last two hours of morning sleep have special benefits of their own). The body seems to be designed for this, as most people’s bodies naturally become more tired in the afternoon, about 8 hours after we wake up.

How Long Should I Sleep?
When you sleep you pass through different stages of sleep, known together as a sleep cycle. These stages include light sleep, deep sleep (which is believed to be the stage in which the body repairs itself), and rapid-eye movement sleep, or REM sleep (during which the mind is repaired).

Many experts advise to keep the nap between 15 and 30 minutes, as sleeping longer gets you into deeper stages of sleep, from which it’s more difficult to awaken. Also, longer naps can make it more difficult to fall asleep at night, especially if your sleep deficit is relatively small. However, research has shown that a 1-hour nap has many more restorative effects than a 30-minute nap, including a much greater improvement in cognitive functioning. The key to taking a longer nap is to get a sense of how long your sleep cycles are, and try to awaken at the end of a sleep cycle. (It’s actually more the interruption of the sleep cycle that makes you groggy, rather than the deeper states of sleep.)

DOPING

Athletes may go round consuming banned performance enhancing drugs to help themselves win something, or perform better. However, many of these athletes just look at how those drugs can help them, and some of their knowledge just comes from word-of-mouth, which may not be true. Very little research is done on the harmful effects when athletes decide to dope. This then leads to the problems that may or will arise.

As we’ve learnt today, take amphetamine as an example, doping can cause lots of health problems. During my presentation, I talked about how such banned substances can affect one’s physiological and psychological state of health. Yes, these drugs may enhance the athletes’ performances, but the long term health effects will affect them greatly too. Cardiovascular problems are just one of the physiological health effects that might arise when doping. Certain drugs trigger an athlete’s heart rate to increase severely and some may have too weak a heart to cope with the change, thus leading to heat attacks. Such health effects may just take the athlete out of the sport, and maybe even death.

Taking steroids for example, people get into what is called, a steroid rage when there’s, maybe, overdose. This may lead to homicidal actions or getting involved in brawls because of the easy agitation. Chris Beniot, a wrestler, went into steroid rage and killed his wife and son, and then ended up committing suicide after that. That was a result of steroid overdose, for the sake of better in-ring performance.

Performance enhancement drugs may be useful in helping athletes build strength and confidence, but there’s just too many risks involved in taking them, which is why WADA has a list of banned substances. Besides helping to maintain fairness in sports, the list also helps to protect the lives of the athletes and their families, in my opinion. So athletes should think twice, and research about such drugs before ever wanting to consume them, and not fall into a trap of dire consequences.
alright, my mum finally helps me to laminate one of my picture taken a few years back at Sentosa. here it is below.

Christmas is coming and everyone's making a wish list. so, i think i'm part of everyone and i've decided to come up with my own wish list consisting of 5 really expensive items. here we go! (not in order of preference)

1. Shades

shown in the pictures above, i would like either one of these shades from Oakley. these are really really sexy shades and i don't think i'll be able to afford them. so, can any of you rich and kind souls get me one of these? the colours and the type of lens i want are shown in the picture. price unknown( i have no idea how much these things cost, but i think it's around S$300).

2. Car

a Honda Civic would be a great Christmas present. the looks, the power, the comfort, now that's a car. all i'm asking for is a grey 1.6l AT model which goes at around S$72k, including COE.

3. Paddle

now, i guess some of you guys have seen dragon boaters carrying these black lightweight paddles around RP, or NYP & NP for that matter. i'm really used to these paddles and i'm hoping to get one myself. made a combination of carbon fiber and carbon kevlar, this paddle is considered one of, or the, lightest paddle in the arena. can someone get me a full black one, like the ones RPDB's using? retail price, S$330.

4. Gaming console

how about some PS3? nobody can miss this out of their wish list! i made a decision a few months back; to choose between the PS3 and the Canon 450D, a gaming console and a camera. i picked the camera, and now i want the console. bring on the beautiful graphics for Christmas! a black set will do. price from S$599 - S$GODKNOWSWHAT.

5. Love

last but not least, love. this is a priceless gift that money can't buy, and everyone needs them, be it love from friends, family, boy/girlfriend or God. i want and need everyone of them. can i have them for Christmas, all of them?

here's a post on some personal stuff.

earlier today, i saw Lynnette's post on what Leonard did on their 1st anniversary together. their first 12months, first 52weeks, first 365days. as gay as this may sound, i found what Leo did for Lynnetta really really sweet.

here comes the emotional part. i thought to myself after looking at the post, 'how sweet these 2 are together, how sweet this nonsense fella can be for his nonsense girl'. then a question struck me, 'can i ever do the same to my girl(whoever it may be)?'. i'm not talking about doing exactly what Leo did, but will i ever be that sweet/ romantic to a girl.

women love these kind of things, and it really makes them love a person even more. it puts a wide smile on their faces and engraves a deep impression and memory into their hearts and minds. but am i able to do such things to make a girl feel this way? i really doubt so.

at the point when i finished reading the post and looking at the pictures, i felt like giving up, just wanting to be alone. reason? i just don't think i'll make a good companion. i've failed in 5 relationships. to some, it's just 5, a handful. to me, it's a lot, a hell lot. it's no joke having to be with 5 different women and still not able to find the right one, yet. my question is now, even if i do find the right one, will she be happy with me?

i think the 5 failures have really brought my confidence and morale down. i'm really lost now. my feelings come and go, they just don't stay and i don't know why.

help, anybody?
